Express Toll Lanes (ETLs) provide motorists the option of paying a fee to drive in highway lanes that are separated from general traffic. Drivers are given a choice to enter the tolled lanes at specific interchanges and on-ramps. No fee is charged to those who choose to stay in the adjacent general purpose lanes. Motorists who enter the ETLs will be charged a fee, which varies based on time of day and congestion conditions. In order to keep traffic moving smoothly, tolls will only be collected electronically. In order to answer common questions and concerns regarding ETLs, Maryland Department of Transportation has published an information booklet called Express Toll Lanes, An Alternative to Gridlock.
